Mahahual is a destination that attracts visitors from all over the world, but for many of its residents, it has become the place where they redefine their future. María del Rosario Martínez and Freddy Gamaliel arrived in this Mexican Caribbean community from different regions of the country in search of job opportunities and stability. However, it was through the educational programs offered by the Mahahual Ki’in Community Center that they were able to transform their daily, professional, and family lives upon graduating from high school.

María del Rosario: Inspiration, growth, and female entrepreneurship

Her story with Mahahual began with a family decision. After moving from Tijuana during the COVID-19 pandemic to reunite with her husband, who worked at the port, she decided to take root in the area and join the community dynamics.

Upon learning about the opportunity to complete her high school education through flexible, in-person modalities, Rosario did not hesitate to enroll. For her, returning to the classroom represented far more than just earning a diploma; it was a clear message of perseverance for her family and other women in the area. Her time in school proved that motherhood and family commitments are not obstacles to continuing to learn and building a career.

Throughout her academic journey, Rosario stood out for her punctuality, active participation in community events, and enthusiasm in the classroom. After completing her studies, she channeled that renewed confidence and drive into entrepreneurship, launching a dessert business and developing a family fast-food establishment in Mahahual.

Freddy: From the kitchen to empathetic and professional leadership

Originally from southern Quintana Roo, Freddy arrived in Mahahual at the age of 28, driven by the search for better employment prospects. With prior experience in the culinary industry, he quickly integrated into the local hotel and restaurant workforce.

It was in this environment that Freddy learned about the academic programs offered at the Community Center, supported by the port company. Motivated by a desire for self-improvement, he decided to enroll to finish high school, finding an educational model adapted to his work schedule and demands.

His school experience not only refreshed his academic knowledge but also directly transformed his perspective on the workplace. Inspired by the teaching methods, teamwork, and human approach of his instructors, Freddy began applying dynamics of collaboration, respect, and guided learning in the kitchen under his care. This shift in his leadership style earned him a promotion to Executive Chef at Malecón 21, a renowned local restaurant and beach club, where he optimized internal organization, improved the work environment, and contributed to the restaurant’s growth in the community.

A future rooted in the community and the aspiration for greater opportunities

Both María del Rosario and Freddy have chosen to make Mahahual their permanent home. In this community, they have found peace, professional development, and the foundation to build their livelihoods and homes.

Both graduates express deep gratitude to the teachers and the organizations that facilitate access to education in the region, emphasizing that these initiatives provide essential tools for human and social development. Their experience reflects the positive impact of collaboration between the private sector and community institutions, inspiring them to look forward to the next step: the possibility of these opportunities expanding into higher education, allowing local talent in Mahahual to continue their studies without having to leave the place they now call home.
